The Eight Precepts

1. To abstain from killing any living beings.
2. To abstain from taking what is not given.
3. To abstain from sexual activity.
4. To abstain from lying and false speech.
5. To abstain from the consumption of intoxicants and drugs.
6. To abstain from eating after noon.
7. To abstain from singing, dancing, music, shows, perfume, cosmetics and decorative accessories.
8. To abstain from using high or luxurious seats or beds.

1.The perfection of Charity; Giving; generosity.

2.The perfection of Morality;Good (or) Moral Conduct.

3.The perfection of Renunciation.

4.The perfection of Wisdom.

5.The perfection of Effort; Perseverance; Energy.

6.The perfection of Patience.

7.The perfection of Truthfulness.

8.The perfection of Resolution;Determination.

9.The perfection of loving-kindness.

10.The perfection of Equanimity.

 

Eight Precepts with Livelihood as the Eighth

May I, Venerable Sir, observe the Eight Precepts with Livelihood as the Eighth together with the three Refuges, Venerable Sir, please have compassion on me and grant me the Precepts.

For the second time,

May I, Venerable Sir, observe the Eight Precepts with Livelihood as the Eighth together with the three Refuges, Venerable Sir, please have compassion on me and grant me the Precepts.

For the third time,

May I, Venerable Sir, observe the Eight Precepts with Livelihood as the Eighth together with the three Refuges, Venerable Sir, please have compassion on me and grant me the Precepts.

Monk: What I recite you (your) follow.

Laity: Yes, Venerable Sir.

Homage to that Blessed One, the Arahant and Perfect Self-Awakened One. (3 times)

Three Refuges

I take refuge in the Buddha.

I take refuge in the Dhamma .

I take refuge in the Samgha.

For the second time, I take refuge in the Buddha.

For the second time, I take refuge in the Dhamma.

For the third time, I take refuge in the Buddha.

For the third time, I take refuge in the Buddha.

For the third time, I take refuge in the Dhamma.

For the third time, I take refuge in the Samgha.

Monk: The Three Refuges are complete.

Laity: Yes, Venerable Sir.

 

I undertake the precept to abstain from destroying living beings.

I undertake the precept to abstain from stealing

I undertake the precept to abstain from sexual misconduct.

I undertake the precept to abstain from false speech.

I undertake the precept to abstain from slandering speech.

I undertake the precept to abstain from harsh speech.

I undertake the precept to abstain from idle speech.

I undertake the precept to abstain from wrong livelihood.

May this merit of mine be conducive to the destruction of the [mental] effluents.

May this merit of observing precepts a condition [for the realization] of Nibbāna.

Monk: Maintaining well the eight precepts with livelihood as the eighth together with the three refuges, strive on with diligence.

Laity: Yes, Venerable Sir.
